The Metropolitan Junior Golf Program (MJGP) was organized in 1993 at the current site of the Metropolitan Golf Links when it was known as the Lew Galbreath Golf Course. The Program is a non-profit organization that was certified as a 501(c)(3) corporation in the following year. (Tax ID 94 - 3301366)
Our primary goal is to offer a program to teach and develop qualities such as integrity, self-esteem, and responsibility to the inner city youth of Oakland and the surrounding communities. At the same time we seek to teach kids the game of golf as the vehicle to improve self esteem and establish beneficial life skills.
Our Program meets every Saturday from 8:00 to 10:00 AM at Metro Golf Links. The curriculum consists of a class instruction on life skills and golf course etiquette and rules. Our course instruction includes ball striking, chipping and putting, back-9 and tournament play. The students are also taught course management, self discipline, and how to make the correct choices on and off the golf course.
All of the instruction along with uniforms, balls, and access to the back-9 comes for a minimal fee of $150 per junior. We also provide financial support for our golfers to attend and compete in tournaments. None of our instructors nor Board members receives any pay for their volunteer efforts. We exist primarily on charitable donations. Parents are expected to fundraise for the organization.
In the past we have received grants from the NCGA Foundation and donations from Callaway Golf, Nike, and Footjoy. We would like to thank the NGCA Foundation for its generous donation in 2023. We only ask parents to contribute an annual fee for each child.
