Instruction

Instruction

The Metropolitan Junior Golf Program is a non-profit organization providing the Oakland area with a comprehensive youth golf program. The program is offered to children ages 7-17 at minimal cost to families. Our volunteer staff of professional instructors assist in developing every phase of the game. We also provide all of the necessary practice equipment including range balls and clubs for each practice session. The only requirement for participation is parental approval.

Practice sessions focus on ball striking and driving, putting, chipping, course management and leadership skills. Juniors are divided into smaller groups and rotate between these four different instruction areas during Saturday practice sessions. A small number of juniors are also offered an opportunity to play the back nine holes with one of our instructors, most Saturdays.

Rules of Conduct for Juniors

All participants are required to show respect at all times for:

  • themselves and their property
  • their coaches
  • their fellow golfers
  • the practice and playing facilities

After all, it is by showing respect that one earns respect.

The following are the rules of conduct you are expected to honor:

  • pay attention to all instructions and lectures.
  • no hitting, kicking or slapping another person.
  • no throwing of equipment on the course or in the classroom.
  • no profanity on the course or in the classroom.
  • no name-calling or other derogatory remarks.
  • address all adults with proper respect, such as "Good morning, Mrs. or Mr. Brown."
  • no baggy shorts or jeans.
  • caps and visors must be worn with the bill in front.
  • shirts must be tucked into the pants.
  • athletic (tennis) shoes or golf shoes only.
  • no cell phones.

Violation of any of the above rules may be grounds for dismissal from the program.

Safety Considerations

Please observe the following safety rules:

  • never enter the driving range area to retrieve balls or clubs.
  • only one student per stall on the driving range.
  • maintain proper distance from other golfers while they are swinging a club.
  • do not walk across the parking lot without adult supervision.
  • use the “buddy” system for bathroom breaks.
  • always inform your instructor when you are leaving the practice area.
  • no running on the driving range or putting area.

Junior Golfer’s Creed

As a junior golfer, I will RESPECT and be good to the game of golf.

Responsibility – I will learn the rules of golf, follow the rules of the course and take responsibility for all of my actions of the course.

Etiquette – I will abide by the rules of etiquette, waiting the proper time to hit, refraining from foul language and boisterous behavior, and generally conducting myself as a young lady or young gentleman on the course.

Sensitivity – I will be sensitive to the environment and the course where I play and to those who maintain and manage it.

Pace – I will keep up with the group ahead and maintain an appropriate pace of play.

Educate – I will do my best to educate others and myself on the principles of this creed and live up to it at every opportunity.

Conditions – I will strive to leave the course in better condition than I find it, by fixing my ball marks (and those of others), replacing my divots, raking bunkers, and properly disposing of trash.

Traditions – I will learn and embrace the rules and traditions of this ancient and honorable game and respect my fellow golfers and the courses we are privileged to play.
